Tenebrous: Opus Magnum

14/05/14  ||  Cobal

All metal sub-genres have something that makes them unique and I’ve always compared that “something” in black metal to a drug. It’s potentially dangerous, it gives you a twisted state of inner peace and it disgusts the many. Add to the equation that it’s absolutely addictive for the few and you’ll start to see the picture. Finally, consider that as the most introspective substance out there, you don’t need it to be anything but the real thing.

Listening to “Opus Magnum” reminded me of all this. It’s precisely the kind of album everybody will regard as mediocre or even a rip-off — and I quote here — “of all those miserable bands out there playing the same easy unchallenging tremolo riff”. They just don’t understand.

The thing is you just need to follow a series of steps to summon the evil-one and it’s all easy when he shows. Better do it right, though, otherwise you’re just playing with fire… And your record will suck beyond any musical explanation. The sad part is that even if you succeed, it’s virtually impossible you stand out in any way. But that’s alright. You do it for the experience.

6,5/10: These people know what they’re doing… And they’re from Florida.
